Engagement payout: what your hours are worth at the average

Epic pays island creators from a pool — 40% of eligible net revenue — split by relative engagement, and does not publish the per-island formula. What it does publish is the totals: $352,000,000 paid across 5.23 billion creator-island hours in 2024. One divided by the other is a platform average of about $67 per 1,000 player-hours — a scale, not a promise.

Both the totals and the tier counts below are Epic's own, from its 2024 Ecosystem Year in Review and the payout graph it published with it.

What playtime is worth at that average

The same arithmetic, rendered for crawlers that do not run the estimator above. Every figure is hours × ($352,000,000 ÷ 5.23B hours).

Actual island payouts spread far around this line: the formula weights playtime around Item Shop spending, so audiences that never spend sit far below it, retention and direct-link acquisition are weighted up, and the pool itself moves with Fortnite's month. Treat the column as a ruler, not a quote.

What creators actually earned in 2024

The same review counts 70,000 creators building for Fortnite in 2024. Epic's own tier graph shows how few cleared even the first rung — and how steep the curve is above it:

What actually moves your engagement payout

Since the number cannot be predicted, the useful question is which levers exist. Epic lists the metrics that feed the formula:

• Active playtime on your island
• Island retention — players returning on later days
• Playtime within a week either side of a player spending V-Bucks in the Item Shop
• User acquisition rewards for players whose first island is yours
• User acquisition rewards for players returning after six months away

The two acquisition rewards are worth reading twice, because they are far larger than the rest. When a player comes to Fortnite for the first time to play your island — or returns after 6 months away — you receive 75% of that player's contributions to the pool for the next 6 months. Bringing players in is compensated on a completely different scale from entertaining the ones already there.

Attribution decides who gets credit, and the rules have edges. Players who reach your island first by search or a direct link are fully attributed to it. Players who arrive through Discover have their contributions split across the islands they play on their first day, by time. Link attribution covers new players on PC and returning players on PC and mobile, and is not available in the EU.

There is one more input worth knowing: 50% of sponsorship revenue from Sponsored Row campaigns also flows into the pool — and through the end of 2026 that share is 100%.

Before you can be paid at all

Enrollment in the engagement payout program has conditions that catch people out:

• a real-money purchase through Epic Payments in the last 365 days (gift card and account balance do not count), or spending and redeeming at least $20 in Fortnite in the last 365 days
• you or the legal entity's representative must be at least 18
• you must abide by the Fortnite Developer Rules

Payouts run monthly, 30 days after the calendar month closes. In-island transaction earnings are calculated monthly too and paid alongside them, so there is a real gap between making the sale and seeing the money.

Rules that shape what you can sell

Offers must be priced between 50 and 5,000 V-Bucks, in increments of 50. The calculator above will tell you when a price is off the grid, because Epic will simply not accept it.

Two operational rules are worth planning around. If you are permanently unpublishing an island, you must stop in-island transactions at least 20 days beforehand — otherwise every V-Buck spent in that window is returned to players and removed from your pending payout. And an unpublished island has 14 days to come back before the same thing happens.

All sales are final for players, but you can initiate bulk returns through Creator Portal covering a window of up to 20 days.

What arrives is V-Bucks unless you changed that

One thing the numbers above do not tell you: V-Bucks credited to a Developer Wallet — this is the default method in the Fortnite Developer Program, not cash. Getting money instead requires a completed Tax Profile and Hyperwallet setup, and cash payouts carry a 100 dollar minimum over 12 months.

So a creator can be earning steadily on paper and still have received no money at all. What that means for tax.
